The Receipts (Parsons School of Design Thesis Project)

Information:

For my thesis project upon graduating at Parsons School of Design, when every designer got a 6ft x 6ft board space to display all of their wonderful best bets, I decided to exhibit something a little different. Over the course of my years as a student at Parsons, I saved every receipt for everything. Every pencil I bought, every photocopy I made, every train ticket I purchased, every U2 CD I got. Everything. I inputed all of this data about my expenditures and made a graph. I placed all the receipts in a big acrylic plexiglass box. So at the final exhibit, I displayed the receipts, a document on a plaque, a graph, and 10 pages of 4pt type of an Excel spreadsheet.

The document plaque said:

To the left is a spreadsheet of every penny I spent since I arrived at Parsons School Of Design two and a half years ago. (Prior to that I attended another school, spreadsheets are available upon request.) If you look at the figures on p.10, you will see the total is $101,531.22 (As of March 10, 1997)

Why did I spend this much? Because of today. The one day in which I am judged. Judgment day, if you will. You can come here today, judge my work, tell me if it is good or bad. And tell me if I will get a good job or a bad job. Instead of judging me upon end product, judge me by examining my expenditures; my materials, my fees, my inspirations, my goals, my art, my mind, my heart. Experience it first hand, then think about donating to the Harth Art Fund to make me happy.
